Best Bargain Family Vacations U S A More than 250 high quality low cost destinations Resorts Dude Ranches National State Parks Family Camps Best Bargain Family Vacations in the USA

The authors of a similar title about Europe (Innocents Abroad: Traveling with Kids in Europe, Plume, 1991), Sutherland and Deutsch began their present work as an informal sharing of inexpensive vacation spots with friends, places not mentioned in other travel guides. They offer a descriptive list of “the best for less” U.S. vacation spots for families. Their listing is divided by the type of vacation, from resorts to dude ranches, and then organized by geographic area. Each entry includes an evaluative description, season(s) available, accommodation information, special features, cost, and nearby attractions, if relevant. Appendixes include lists of budget motel chains and of U.S. tourist offices. An important addition to public libraries.?Alison Hopkins, Queens Borough P.L., N.Y.

5 Stars AWESOME!
Absolutely loved it! Very informative. Plenty of interesting places to try with my family, with varying amenities and prices for everyone. Glad to have stumbled across this.

5 Stars Lots of great ideas for family vacations
I really enjoyed reading the book The Best Bargain Family Vacations in the USA. At the advice of this book, my family and I just went to Family Camp at the Centerville Mills YMCA Camp in Bainbridge Township, Ohio, over Memorial Day weekend 1999. We arrived at 10 a.m. Saturday and left at noon Monday. The $75 per person fee included six meals, two nights lodging in a dorm style lodge room, a lot of horseback riding on lovely trails (they have over 150 acres of land), canoeing in the little lake, making tie dyed t shirts, archery, a hay ride, a campfire with s’mores, a night hike, other nature hikes, and swimming in the pool. My son loved shooting bb guns and fishing - the little lake is stocked with bluegills. My daughter loved the Rodeo Games, and, of course, the trail rides. I am looking forward to trying some of the other “Best Bargain Family Vacations in the U.S.A.” - this first one we tried was a real winner. Great book!

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Interesting but not terribly relevant if you have kids
Interesting book, got some good tours, however if you are going to be RVing with children, this is not the book to plan that trip with. The sights mentioned in here are adult friendly only, and no allowances are made for childrens attractions at all.

The camping site information is okay, but again, they don’t highlight sites with children friendly facilities. I think this book could do with more information for families and less information about scary bathrooms. Most of the bathroom information is enough to put me off travelling to start with.

Also Doesn’t cover enough of europe to make it terribly relevant to planning a big trip and seems to have un-necessary stops where one central location could cover far more territory with much less driving and more use of public transport. The Benelux chapter is a great indication of this, with the first three driving being all about 3 hours in total, which is a lot of moving when one central location and some public transport would have gotten you all the sights and only one move.

Would like to see more information about the attractions available in each stop as well.

Interesting book for working out distances and how long it might take to get to places, but not terribly relevant for anything else

4 Stars camp europe
Definitely worth buying..Good info on selected European campgrounds. Clear info on the campgrounds, directions, etc. Even nice if you are not planning to follow the authors’ tours.

Life Dream Destinations 100 of the Worlds Best Vacations

This is a book of enticements or memories–or both. The things we remember best and longest are the lovely times on vacation with family or friends. That sublime afternoon on the secluded beach on Martha’s Vineyard, or that unforgettable crimson sunset as seen from the top of Coppertop Mountain. That extraordinary safari in Africa, and snorkeling along Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. In stunning photographs and evocative text, the editors of LIFE take you there–to the best, most beautiful, most relaxing, most inspiring places to vacation on the planet. This book is an enticement–to go there. And it is a remembrance of those magical places you’ve already gone. Live that vacation again, every time you open this special volume.

User Ratings and Reviews

2 Stars Disappointing
The cover of this book would lead to think the whole book was filled with pictures like this. Pictures of exotic places from all over the world that make us wonder in awe what it would be like to visit. Unfortunately, pictures and locations like the one on the cover are few and far between.

When I think of ‘dream destinations’ I think of spectacularly beautiful, far away places I may never have a chance to see in my lifetime. This does not seem to be the case for the books writers.

Out of the 100 locations in the book, 35 are located in the U.S. If you are from the U.S., where this book is marketted, most U.S. destinations are not what I would consider a ‘dream’ to see. Such locations listed in the U.S. are Orlando, a sculpture garden at Standford, a Montana dude ranch, golfing in Oregon, and New York City, Memphis, and a host of other not-so-amazing places.

You would think many of the destinations would be found in foreign countries and other continents. Not so. There is only one place in South America, four in Africa, and one in Australia.

Out of the 100 places, I would only consider maybe 30 to be a dream destination.

The descriptions of the places are not very impressive either. More than half of the write-up for Snowmass, Co talks about other ski resorts in the U.S. rather than Snowmass.

The book wasn’t horribly bad, just disappointing.

4 Stars Dream destinations
The book is wonderful and what is even more wonderful for me is that I LIVE in one of the dream destinations…beautiful Bucks County PA.

Vacation Education destination Epcot

Vacation Education destination Epcot

…a great book written by a homeschooling mom. Go to vacationeducationbooks.com and check out the Epcot book. It has material for unit studies on every country in the world showcase and on each attraction/area in Futureworld. We are loving ours! Even if you already have this year’s curriculum planned, I’d get it anyway, because it will really, exponentially increase your families enjoyement of the World Showcase, which is an amazing place. I’ve been to Epcot 3 times, and I can’t believe how much I’ve missed. –Ashley; posted on WDWMagic tips

I just got the book today and I love it! Looking forward to more editions. Honestly, this is one of the best ideas I have seen in a long time. –~Rayven Perkins@stay-a-stay-at-home-mom.com

I just wanted to say I so appreciate your product, your acknowledgement of your walk within the foreward of the book and your faith to follow “the call” and do a book like this to help other (homeschool or otherwise) families. I look forward to more products from ya’ll and will let my friends know about you as well. God Bless! –Bethany Baker, customer

Outsides Wilderness Lodge Vacations More Than 100 Prime Destinations in North America Plus Central America and the Caribbean

Outsides Wilderness Lodge Vacations More Than 100 Prime Destinations in North America Plus Central America and the Caribbean

The editors of Outside magazine present outstanding wilderness lodges worthy of its millions of active, loyal readers.

This user-friendly vacation guide details the outdoor adventures, accommodations, cuisine, and more at over 100 wilderness lodges from Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula to the isles of the Caribbean. Far from the rat race of urban life, these special places offer more than a physical escape. They’re retreats for anyone who considers an afternoon on the trail or in a kayak or climbing a peak to be the ultimate indulgence.

With a wide range of prices and locations—from the rustic, upstate New York lodge where climbers congregate between ascents, to the exclusive, fly-in-only Alaskan luxury resort that has hosted former presidents—the guide contains something for everyone. Lodges are arranged by geographic region and state, but indexes allow readers to browse by activity, price range, family-friendliness, pet policy, or special programs. What all the lodges have in common is a service ethic and attention to detail that have earned them a reputation for excellence. 50 black-and-white illustrations, 32 pages of color.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Not what I wanted thought
It was a helpful and informative book, but it didn’t contain as many lodges as I thought it would have and the info wasn’t as extensive on the lodges it had.

3 Stars Almost There
This book offers an excellent and large selection of destinations and provides ample information about them. I would wish for a greater number of unusual entries, however, those uncovered with more depth of searching. As destination ideas, these entries are not difficult to obtain on one’s own.

5 Stars finally, a guidebook that makes you laugh
This is a guide for the fun loving, adventurous traveler who is looking for a comfy place to crash. I have already been to 3 of the places listed in California and the guide was accurate, honest and easy to use.

Destination Antarctica

April 27, 2009 by Vacation Destinations · Leave a Comment

Destination Antarctica

Grade 4-6 Swan takes readers on a personal journey, a trek following in the footsteps of Robert Scott and his companions, on foot, from McMurdo Sound to the South Pole, without air support, radio, or emergency beacons. He describes the rather long process of gaining experience and obtaining companions, funding, supplies, and transportation for a late summer landing on the shores of Antarctica. Here they must wait out the winter until the coming of spring allows them to set off, towing their supply sleds behind them. The difficulties were enormous. Heavy loads, rugged terrain, bitter cold, personal injury, and sled problems slowed their pace. Exhaustion depleted their energy to the point where it was difficult to summon the strength to prepare the food they so desperately required. All in all, the expedition was successful, even though their supply ship was crushed by the Antarctic ice pack, fortunately without loss of life. Members of the staff stayed behind an extra dark winter to assure that the shore was left in its original pristine condition (even the walkers in their weakest condition towed their trash with them!). The spare text is complemented perfectly by a profusion of color photos. A modern epic journey, presented to young readers in a graceful, colorful package.
